DENTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers are investigating after a man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound during a traffic stop in Denton, according to police.
The incident occurred around 12:18 p.m. on April 14, 2026, on Montecito Drive just south of El Paseo Street.
Denton Police Department detectives were attempting to serve a search warrant as part of an ongoing investigation when they observed the suspect driving and initiated a traffic stop.
Authorities said the vehicle came to a stop, and before detectives could approach, the man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed he was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no other injuries were reported.
The man’s identity has not yet been released and will be provided by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office pending notification of next of kin.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation.
