DALLAS, Texas. Dallas Area Rapid Transit has been awarded a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to modernize eight light rail stations in South Dallas, improving accessibility, safety and passenger experience along the agency's Red and Blue lines.
The funding is part of more than $1.73 billion in federal grants awarded to 127 public transportation projects across the country.
According to DART, the project will upgrade eight station platforms by removing center crosswalks and leveling boarding areas to provide easier, more accessible boarding for passengers, particularly those with limited mobility, people using wheelchairs and travelers with luggage.
The project also includes new wayfinding signage and enhanced security systems designed to improve navigation and create a safer environment for riders.
DART Chief Operating Officer Trenise Winters said the investment will help modernize the transit system while improving access for thousands of daily passengers.
"This grant funding continues our commitment to modernizing our entire system," Winters said. "Upgrading these eight South Dallas stations means closing transit equity gaps and providing a smoother, safer journey for thousands of our passengers every day."
Transit officials said the federal grant will substantially reduce the amount of local funding needed to complete the project, allowing DART to continue infrastructure improvements while maintaining its focus on fiscal responsibility and keeping the rail system in good repair.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2027. The station upgrades will be completed in phases through 2030.
