GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - A 28-year-old man and a juvenile were killed Wednesday afternoon after an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into the back of a parked waste collection truck in Grand Prairie, according to police.
The crash happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 in the 500 block of N.E. 5th Street.
Grand Prairie Police said a Chevrolet Suburban was traveling southbound on N.E. 5th Street when it struck the rear of the parked waste collection truck.
The driver of the Suburban, identified by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office as 28-year-old Tomas Castro-Martinez, was pronounced dead at the scene by Grand Prairie Fire Department medics.
Three juveniles who were riding in the Suburban were transported to area hospitals.
Hospital personnel later notified investigators that one of the juveniles had died from their injuries. A second juvenile remained in critical but stable condition, while the third suffered minor injuries.
Authorities have not released the identities or ages of the juveniles.
Police Say SUV Was Traveling at High Rate of Speed
Witness statements and surveillance video obtained from nearby businesses indicated the Suburban was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking the waste collection truck, according to investigators.
Police also determined that the occupants of the SUV were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
No other injuries were reported.
Investigators have not said what caused Castro-Martinez to strike the parked truck or whether any other factors may have contributed to the collision.
The fatal crash remains under investigation by the Grand Prairie Police Department.
