Off-Duty Arlington Police Officer Shot in Dallas, 33-Year-Old Man Arrested

DALLAS, Texas - An off-duty Arlington police officer was hospitalized after being shot early Sunday morning in Dallas, and a 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene, according to the Dallas Police Department.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Aug. 16 in the 3100 block of South Westmoreland Road.

The preliminary investigation determined that an off-duty Arlington police officer was shot by 33-year-old Darriyous Johunkin, Dallas Police said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue transported the wounded officer to a local hospital. Police said the officer was in stable condition.

The officer's identity has not been released.

Suspect Arrested at Scene

Johunkin was taken into custody at the scene following the shooting, according to Dallas Police.

He was subsequently transported to the Lew Sterrett Justice Center and is being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault Causes Bodily Injury Family Violence and Interefer with  Emergency Request for Assistance.  His bond has been set at $235,000.

Police have not released information about what led to the shooting, whether the officer and Johunkin knew one another, or what the off-duty officer was doing at the location when the incident occurred.

Dallas Police said detectives are continuing to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
