Driver Killed After Getting Out of Car Following Crash on Central Expressway in Richardson

RICHARDSON, Texas - A 36-year-old man was killed Sunday night after getting out of his car following a crash on Central Expressway in Richardson and being struck by another vehicle, police said.

Richardson police identified the man as Michael Barrera.

Officers responded around 8:55 p.m. Aug. 30 to the southbound lanes of the 100 block of South Central Expressway after several callers reported a major crash.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford pickup with a blown tire was traveling south at a slow speed in the left lane when an Infiniti sedan struck the pickup from behind.

Both vehicles stopped in the left lane. The drivers of the Ford and Infiniti, along with a passenger from the Infiniti, got out of their vehicles.

A Volkswagen sedan then approached the crash scene and took evasive action to avoid the stopped vehicles, police said.

The Volkswagen struck Barrera, who was standing near the center concrete divider. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Volkswagen also struck the Ford pickup and its driver. The pickup driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The passenger from the Infiniti and the Volkswagen driver were not injured.

The Richardson Police Department's Special Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene and is investigating the crash.
