Knife-Wielding Man Fatally Shot by Arlington Police During Suicidal Person Call

ARLINGTON, Texas - A 56-year-old man armed with a knife died after an Arlington police officer shot him during a response to a suicidal person call Thursday night, police said.

Officers were dispatched at 10:44 p.m. Sept. 17 to a home in the 1700 block of W. Lovers Lane, near S. Fielder Road. The 911 caller reported that a man inside the home was making suicidal comments and had access to knives.

Four Arlington Police officers responded. According to the department, the caller met officers at the front door and directed them to the room where the man was located.

As officers approached, they heard yelling and learned that a family member was also inside the room with him.

Police opened the door and got the family member out. As one officer entered the room, police said the man became upset and pulled out a large knife.

The officer repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, but he did not comply, according to the department. Police said the man then moved toward the officer while still holding the knife.

The officer fired multiple rounds, striking the man.

Officers immediately began providing first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

No officers or other people inside the home were injured.

All four responding officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

The Arlington Police Department's Homicide Unit is conducting a criminal investigation to determine whether any criminal offenses occurred. The department's Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate administrative investigation into whether officers followed department policies and procedures.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release the man's identity.
