Investigation Update on Drowning of Three Children at Irving Apartment Complex

On Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at approximately 3:45 p.m. the Irving Police Department responded to the 2300 block of North MacArthur Blvd on calls of a drowning. Officers arrived to find two children at the poolside receiving CPR treatment. As officers and paramedics took over, they were told of a third child still in the pool. Irving Fire Department personnel pulled the child from the pool and began CPR treatment. All three children were transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
Detectives conducted a preliminary investigation and learned that the mother, Patricia Allen, had taken five of her children to the pool. The children, ages 3, 6, 9, 10 and 11, along with their mother were playing in the pool. As the mother was preoccupied with the two younger children, the three older children went underwater. Neither the children nor the mother knew how to swim. An apartment maintenance man and others responded to the mother’s cry for help and began a rescue effort.

Later that afternoon, detectives were notified that August Smith, 10 years old, had died and that Treshawn Smith, 9 years old, and Anthony Smith, 11 years old, were on life support. On June 28, 2015 at approximately 9:15 p.m. detectives were notified that Treshawn and Anthony had died.

At this point, detectives are investigating the incident as an accidental death case; however, if the facts and circumstances support that a crime has occurred, the case will be referred to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. Additional details are limited due to the ongoing investigation. Detectives ask that anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the drownings contact the Irving Police Department at (972) 273-1010.
