Denton Police Department (DPD) officers and detectives are actively investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the 2600 block of W. University earlier tonight. The incident took place at approximately 8:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, in the parking lot of Winco Foods, resulting in the death of one adult male.
Upon receiving the report of a shooting, officers swiftly responded to the scene. Tragically, they discovered an adult male victim who had suffered at least one gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Preliminary findings indicate that the shooter had already fled the area before law enforcement arrived, ensuring there was no ongoing immediate threat to the public. Denton PD detectives have since established that the male shooter had some level of acquaintance with the victim, although the exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.
While the investigation is ongoing, Denton PD has already identified a person of interest and is not currently seeking assistance from the public.
