In the late hours of Friday, September 22, 2023, the Arlington Police Department responded to a distressing incident in the 1800 block of E. Mitchell Street near New York Ave. At approximately 11:50 p.m., authorities received a report of a shooting in the area.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a 33-year-old man who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Urgent medical attention was administered, and the victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On Saturday, September 23, 2023, medical staff informed authorities that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives actively working on the case have revealed that their preliminary findings suggest the victim was engaged in a physical altercation with a group of individuals when the situation took a deadly turn. During the altercation, an individual produced a firearm and opened fire, striking the victim. Following the shooting, the suspects fled the scene.
Authorities do not believe this incident to be random in nature. Based on their ongoing investigation, it is suspected that the victim had some level of familiarity with at least one of the individuals involved in the altercation.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to this incident. Detectives are diligently pursuing leads and appealing to residents in the area for assistance. They urge local residents to review any surveillance camera footage they may have from their homes, as it may contain valuable evidence that can aid in the investigation.
