Arlington Police Arrest Suspect in February Shooting Death Linked to Ballistics Evidence

The Arlington Police Department has arrested 25-year-old Rondre Mayberry in connection to the shooting death of 51-year-old Ricardo Oliveros on February 13, 2024. Mayberry, who is currently serving a five-year prison sentence at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility in Abilene for an unrelated 2024 conviction, has been charged with one count of Murder.

The incident occurred around 10:38 PM when officers responded to reports of a man lying on the ground near a pickup truck in the 2200 block of Remynse Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Oliveros with gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Surveillance footage from a nearby school showed Oliveros pulling up to the scene in his pickup truck and stopping along Remynse Drive. The video captured a man, later identified as Mayberry, approaching the vehicle on foot. Moments later, the footage indicated the suspect fired a shot before fleeing the scene.

Investigators recovered a shell casing from the crime scene and entered it into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), a national database used by law enforcement to generate investigative leads from ballistic evidence. In June 2024, detectives received a hit on the shell casing, prompting further investigation into Mayberry.

On June 8, 2024, APD Patrol officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Forest Hollow Lane after reports of a gun being displayed during a verbal altercation. Officers located Mayberry, arrested him for Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Violating a Protective Order. They recovered a handgun from him, which was later test-fired for ballistic analysis.

The ballistic evidence showed that the shell casing from the murder scene matched the handgun recovered from Mayberry, linking him directly to Oliveros's death. Detectives attempted to interview Mayberry regarding the murder, but he declined to speak and requested an attorney.

Additionally, detectives investigated a traffic stop involving Mayberry in January 2024, where he provided his cell phone number to the officer. Using this information, investigators obtained a search warrant for his cell phone records. Analysis of the records revealed that Mayberry's phone pinged at the crime scene approximately one minute before the shooting, corroborating the timeline from the surveillance footage. The phone also pinged at locations north of the crime scene, consistent with the direction the suspect fled.

Chief of Police Al Jones commended the efforts of the detectives and various APD units involved in the investigation, stating, “Had it not been for the outstanding and meticulous police work, we would not be in the position to file criminal charges and provide justice to Mr. Oliveros’ family. I’m incredibly proud of their dedication and efforts.”

A motive for the shooting remains unclear, as investigators have not yet established any known connection between Oliveros and Mayberry.
