Texas Man with ISIS Ties Kills 15 in Deadly Bourbon Street Terror Attack

New Orleans Police press conference

UPDATE: Authorities said that the death toll is now up to 15.

On Wednesday, January 1, 2024, at approximately 3:15 a.m. CST, a deadly attack occurred on Bourbon Street in New Orleans when an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens more. After striking the crowd, the suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire on local law enforcement. Officers returned fire, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a nearby hospital.

The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. He was driving a rented Ford pickup truck, and investigators are working to determine how Jabbar obtained the vehicle. Inside the truck, authorities found an ISIS flag, leading to an investigation into his potential ties to terrorist organizations.

Weapons and a possible improvised explosive device (IED) were discovered in the suspect's vehicle. Additional IEDs were found in the French Quarter. The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working alongside local law enforcement to assess and neutralize these devices.

The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation, treating the incident as an act of terrorism. Authorities are actively working to identify any potential associates of Jabbar and are pursuing all leads.

The FBI has set up a digital tip line, and we ask anyone with information or video of the incident to submit them to www.fbi.gov/bourbonstreetattack or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
