GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Two people are dead and one person injured following a family violence incident that escalated into an officer-involved shooting late Sunday night, according to the Grand Prairie Police Department.
On Sunday, December 28, at approximately 10 p.m., officers responded to a reported family violence shooting in the 1600 block of Avenue B. Investigators say a 62-year-old Asian male shot his adult son in the face after the son intervened in an argument between the suspect and the suspect’s mother.
Despite being shot, the son survived and was able to flee the residence. He went to a nearby home, where a neighbor called 911. The son was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
When officers arrived, they established a perimeter around the home and attempted multiple times to make contact with the suspect, without success. Officers were aware that the suspect’s mother was still inside the residence.
Tactical officers later forced entry through the front door. Police say the suspect immediately began firing a rifle at officers. Officers returned fire, fearing for their lives, and the suspect retreated further into the home.
Officers then entered the residence and located the mother inside a bedroom with apparent gunshot wounds. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by Grand Prairie Fire Department medics.
The suspect was found inside a bathroom with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was also pronounced dead at the scene.
During the exchange of gunfire, one Grand Prairie police officer was struck by ricochet gunfire and suffered minor injuries. That officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other officers were injured.
The identities of the deceased will be released by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office after next of kin have been notified.
Per department policy, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Team is conducting an independent investigation. The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is also conducting a separate administrative review.
