Roanoke Police Motorcycle Officer Critically Injured in SH 114 Crash During Attempted Traffic Stop

ROANOKE, Texas - A Roanoke police officer was critically injured early Sunday after a motorcyclist fled an attempted traffic stop and both motorcycles collided with another vehicle on State Highway 114, according to the Roanoke Police Department.

The crash happened during the early morning hours of Sept. 20 on SH 114 just west of Interstate 35W.

Police said officers were conducting traffic enforcement along the highway following numerous complaints about motorcycles traveling at high speeds in the area while attending an event at Texas Motor Speedway.

The officer, who was riding a police motorcycle, attempted to stop a motorcyclist when the rider fled, according to the department.

During the incident, both the officer and the fleeing motorcyclist were involved in a collision with another vehicle.

The officer was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Police have not released his name or provided additional information about his injuries.

The motorcyclist was taken into custody and was also being treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. The suspect's identity and any potential charges have not been released.

Later Sunday, the Roanoke Police Department said it had received an outpouring of offers from community members, former officers and other law enforcement agencies seeking ways to help the injured officer and his family.

The department said people wishing to assist can drop off gift cards at the Roanoke Police Department. Restaurant, grocery, gas, DoorDash, Uber Eats, Target and Walmart gift cards were among those requested to help the family during the officer's recovery.

Cards and written messages for the officer and his family are also being accepted.

Police cautioned the public against donating through unverified links or third-party fundraisers. Any official fundraising or other opportunities to provide assistance will be announced through the City of Roanoke or Roanoke Police Department's social media accounts.
