Arlington Police Release Bodycam Video of Fatal Shooting of Man Armed With Knife

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police have released body-camera video showing the moments leading up to the fatal police shooting of a 56-year-old man inside a home on West Lovers Lane.

David Eversole was shot Sept. 17 after police said he pulled out a large knife and moved toward an officer who was backing out of a room.

The encounter began at 10:44 p.m., when officers were called to a home in the 1700 block of W. Lovers Lane for a report of a suicidal person. The 911 caller told dispatchers that Eversole was making suicidal comments and had access to knives.

Four Arlington officers responded.

The person who called 911 met them at the front door and led them toward the room where Eversole was located. As officers approached, they could hear yelling and learned that another family member was inside the room with him.

Officers opened the door and got the family member out.

One officer then entered the room. Police said Eversole became upset and pulled out a large knife.

The officer repeatedly ordered him to drop it.

Eversole did not comply, according to the department. As the officer began backing out of the room, police said Eversole moved toward him while still holding the knife.

The officer fired multiple rounds, striking Eversole.

Officers immediately began providing first aid and continued until paramedics arrived. Eversole was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

No officers or other people inside the home were injured.

The Arlington Police Department has now released relevant portions of the officers' body-worn camera footage from the encounter. The video contains profanity and has been age-restricted on YouTube.

Two separate investigations began after the shooting.

The department's Homicide Unit is conducting the criminal investigation to determine whether any criminal offenses occurred. Internal Affairs is conducting a separate administrative review to determine whether the officers followed department policies and procedures.

Both investigations remain open.

All four officers who responded to the call were initially placed on administrative leave under department policy. They have since returned to duty.
