A routine traffic stop took a harrowing turn last night as a Mesquite Police Officer found themselves in a pursuit that concluded with an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred on August 11, 2023, at approximately 8:46 P.M., near the intersection of W Scyene Rd and Gross Rd.
The events began when a vigilant Mesquite Police Officer attempted to pull over a silver Honda Pilot traveling westbound on W Scyene Rd. The driver of the suspect vehicle, however, ignored the officer's signals to stop and instead accelerated, initiating a high-speed pursuit through the city streets.
During the chase, the suspect vehicle collided with several other vehicles and struck road signs. The pursuit finally came to an end when the Honda Pilot crashed into a yard in the 1700 block of Carnation Dr.
Exiting the damaged vehicle, the suspect driver was met with verbal commands from the pursuing officer, who was demanding compliance. Instead of complying, the suspect began reaching back into the vehicle, prompting the officer to respond with gunfire. The suspect was struck by the officer's shots.
Mesquite Police Officers provided life-saving measures to the wounded suspect until medical personnel arrived on the scene. Despite their efforts, the suspect's injuries proved fatal. The individual was subsequently transported to a local area hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.
No officers sustained injuries during the intense incident. A firearm was discovered within the suspect vehicle.
The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as a seasoned member of the Mesquite Police Department, boasting fourteen years of service.
