Fort Worth Police Officer Killed in Accident Scene on I-35W

The Fort Worth Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its officers, Sgt. Billy Randolph, who died in the line of duty on the morning of August 12, 2024. Sgt. Randolph, badge number 2797, was fatally injured while responding to a motor vehicle accident on I-35 Southbound near Sycamore School Road.

Sgt. Randolph was on the scene of the accident, assisting with cleanup and investigation, when he was struck by a vehicle that drove through the accident area. The driver of the vehicle has been taken into police custody. Sgt. Randolph was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sgt. Randolph was a father, husband, brother, and son, with a service record spanning 29 years in the Fort Worth Police Department. He was most recently assigned to South Patrol. The department has requested that the community keep Sgt. Randolph's family, friends, and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with details still emerging.

UPDATE:  At approximately 2:30 am, an 18-Wheeler hit a wall exiting I35W southbound at Sycamore School Road.  The truck caught fire and spilled fuel.  The entire southbound freeway and service was shut down.    At around 5:38 AM, a vehicle came through the accident barricades setup to protect officers.  At the time, Sgt. Randolph was standing on the exit ramp from I-35W to Sycamore School Rd when the driver drove the wrong way up the exit ramp hitting Randolph.  The driver is in police custody.  The driver has been identified as 25-year-old De Aujalae Evans of Fort Worth.  Evans has been charged with intoxication manslaughter causing the death of a peace officer.
