National Programs Draw Nimitz Students

Ana Ibanez
History students from Irving's Nimitz High School have earned the opportunity to participate in national programs designed to support their studies.

Senior Ana Ibanez attended the Freedom Foundation American Leaders Youth Summit at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, March 12-15. The program was a three-day conference for high school students to interact with experts on citizenship, democracy, the free enterprise system, judicial system, and political process. During the summit, Ibanez visited the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, and toured the revolutionary war battlefield at Valley Forge.

Nimitz Junior Historians Genesis Sanchez and Minh Le, have been selected as the only students from Texas to attend the Congressional Academy for American History and Civics this summer.

The Congressional Academy is a program that leads two high school students from each state and Puerto Rico in a careful study of the pivotal turning points in American history. Sanchez and Le will spend 12 days in Washington, D.C., participating in seminars, historical visits, and interactive participation in in-depth study of three important eras in history.

Visits to sites in Philadelphia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and in Washington will focus on the Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg Address, and “I Have a Dream” speech.

Students will earn college credit for attending the program and all expenses are paid by the U.S. Department of Education.
