Irving Fire Department: Be Aware Of Lithium Battery Fire Safety

Lithium-ion batteries used in such items as your phone, tablet, hoverboards, and scooters have caused devastating house fires in Irving. Do you know how to use and store them safely?

Follow these tips below!

  • Stop using the batteries if you notice an odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking or odd noises.
  • Always use the manufactuer's cord and power adapter made specifically for the device. Don't overcharge lithium batteries.
  • Do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or a couch.
  • Purchase and use devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory, like Underwriters Laboratory (UL).
  • Store spare lithium batteries away from anything that can burn. Keep them in a cool, dry place.
  • Don't put lithium batteries in household trash. Recycle them at a designated spot, such as Batteries Plus Bulbs or other hazardous waste collection points in Irving.
