Irving Police Provides Update on What Led to the Officer Involved Shooting

On Thursday night, May 11, 2023, about 24 hours prior to the Officer Involved Shooting, Irving Police responded to 3300 block of Willowcreek for a "shots fired" call.

Upon arrival, officers found a victim, Juan Carlos Piedra Sabios, deceased in his vehicle with gunshot wounds.

Witnesses at the location identified 40-year-old Carlos Munguia of Irving as the shooting.   Witnesses also said Munguia exited his apartment, walked up to Sabios' car and started shooting.  No words were exchanged by the suspect nor the victim prior to the shooting.

After the shooting, Munguia fled on foot.  Irving Police search the area for the suspect through the night and into the morning.  The fugitive unit joined the search Friday morning to find the armed and dangerous suspect.

Following leads received during the day, three Irving fugitive unit officers encountered Munguia in the "grass area" of the 3300 block of Highway 183 near the Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Officers gave verbal commands for the suspect to lay on the ground.  At that point, Munguia turned around; took out his loaded gun and pointed it at the officers.  All three officers fired at the suspect.

Munguia has a previous record in Irving for an assault with a knife case and also a criminal history in Florida for narcotics and assaultive behaviour according IPD.

Munguia died on arriving at Parkland Hospital.
