Denton Police Arrest 19-Year-Old in Connection with Murder of 16-Year-Old

Denton Police Department announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old resident. Marcus Williams, a resident of Sanger, was taken into custody following an investigation into the incident that occurred late Saturday night.

The incident unfolded at approximately 11:37 p.m. on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, when authorities responded to a call reporting an unconscious person near Denia Park at Roselawn Drive and Bernard Street. Upon arrival, responders discovered the victim, identified as 16-year-old Ely Mendez Gomez, with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, Gomez was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

Witnesses at the scene, including a female passenger who was present in Gomez's vehicle during the shooting, provided crucial information to investigators. According to reports, all witnesses described a suspect dressed in dark clothing with a ski mask covering their face at the park. The female passenger also recounted seeing the suspect brandishing a firearm.

As the investigation progressed, detectives pieced together evidence, including surveillance footage and digital records, leading them to identify Marcus Williams as a person of interest. Williams, who is reportedly the boyfriend of the female passenger, was observed following the victim's vehicle on the night of the shooting.

On Wednesday afternoon, Denton Police arrested Williams at a business located in the 1500 block of W. University Drive. As of now, he remains in custody at the City of Denton Jail, awaiting the setting of his bond.
