Abilene Police Fatally Shoot Suspect Wielding Weapon at United Supermarket

Abilene Police responded to a disturbance at United Supermarket on 920 North Willis on Monday, May 6, 2024, at approximately 2 p.m. Store employees alerted authorities about a male individual wielding a bladed weapon, threatening both customers and staff, while also demanding money from the cash register.

The suspect exited the premises, prompting employees to secure the door to safeguard those inside. Upon police arrival, the individual remained outside brandishing the weapon and disregarded officers' orders to surrender it. Despite the use of a Taser, which proved ineffective, officers were compelled to fire upon the suspect.

Regrettably, the male was declared deceased by a Justice of the Peace. Following standard protocol, two officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave. The investigation is underway, conducted jointly by local authorities and the Texas Rangers of the Department of Public Safety.

The identity of the deceased will be disclosed following notification of their next of kin. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported during the incident.
