ALVARADO, TX – Federal authorities are searching for 32-year-old Benjamin Hanil Song of Dallas in connection with what officials describe as an "ambush" targeting law enforcement officers outside the Prairieland Detention Center on July 4.
According to a federal criminal complaint, Song is facing six charges, including three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Investigators say Song, a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, was one of at least two gunmen who opened fire from a wooded area near the ICE facility after 10–12 individuals allegedly lured two correctional officers and an Alvarado Police officer outside. Two AR-15-style rifles found in the woods were traced back to Song, including one allegedly modified with a binary trigger to increase its rate of fire. 10 individuals have already been charged.
Authorities believe Song may have remained in the area overnight before fleeing. He was possibly spotted on camera at DFW Airport on Sunday.
Song served in the Marine Corps Reserves from 2011 to 2016 and received an other than honorable discharge.
The FBI has issued a blue alert to all mobile phones in the DFW area and is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to Song’s arrest.
