The United Football League has named longtime college football coach Rick Neuheisel as the new head coach of the Dallas Renegades.

The announcement was made by UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon and comes after Bob Stoops retired earlier this month following three seasons leading the franchise.

Brandon said Neuheisel brings a level of experience and credibility that fits the league’s mission. He praised Neuheisel’s ability to develop players and elevate programs, adding that his presence will strengthen both the Renegades and the UFL as a whole.

Neuheisel’s coaching career spans nearly five decades and includes head coaching stops at Colorado, Washington, and UCLA. He compiled an 87–59 record at the collegiate level, highlighted by a Pac-10 championship and Rose Bowl victory with Washington in 2000 and a Pac-12 South Division title at UCLA in 2011. He also spent time in the NFL as an assistant coach with the Baltimore Ravens.

In 2019, Neuheisel coached the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football, leading the team to a 5–3 record before the league folded.

“I am elated to join the UFL as the head coach of the Dallas Renegades,” Neuheisel said. “I’ve believed in spring football since my days playing in the USFL, and it’s exciting to be part of this league and the sports culture in Dallas. Following Bob Stoops won’t be easy, but I can’t wait to get to work.”

Before his coaching career, Neuheisel starred as quarterback at UCLA, leading the Bruins to a Pac-10 championship and a dominant win in the 1984 Rose Bowl. He later played professionally in the USFL with the San Antonio Gunslingers and spent time in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

UFL Senior Vice President and League General Manager Doug Whaley said Neuheisel’s background as a player, coach, and broadcaster brings valuable perspective to the league.

Neuheisel will continue his role as a college football analyst for CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network, where he has worked since 2015. He also co-hosts Full Ride on SiriusXM College Sports Radio.

The Renegades are expected to begin preparations under Neuheisel’s leadership ahead of the upcoming UFL season.
