TARRANT COUNTY, Texas — A 66-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after a Tarrant County jury convicted him of assaulting a family member, according to prosecutors.
Dewayne Phillip Jones was convicted on April 6, 2026, in connection with a violent attack on his girlfriend in April 2023.
Prosecutors said Jones assaulted and strangled the victim during the incident.
During the punishment phase, jurors also heard evidence that while Jones was out on bond for the assault, Fort Worth police responded to his home in July 2023 and found the same victim dead from a drug overdose.
Jurors additionally learned Jones had threatened to murder another woman in Tarrant County approximately 20 years earlier.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Edward Tomlin and Melinda Hogan. District Attorney Investigator Mike McGuire also assisted in the case. McGuire has been with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office for more than eight years and previously served with the North Richland Hills Police Department as a hostage and crisis negotiator.
Jones was sentenced to 20 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
