Carrollton Man Sentenced to 60 Years for Shooting Estranged Wife in Face and Shoulder at Frisco 7-Eleven
Abelardo Espinoza

McKINNEY, Texas — A 56-year-old Carrollton man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after a Collin County jury convicted him of shooting his estranged wife in the face and shoulder outside a Frisco convenience store in June 2024.

Abelardo Espinoza, 56, was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury to a family member, a first-degree felony, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced.

The shooting occurred during the early morning hours of June 22, 2024, at a 7-Eleven near the intersection of Eldorado Parkway and Preston Road in Frisco.

According to prosecutors, Frisco police responded after a woman called for help and reported that her husband had shot her.

Officers arrived and found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds to her face and shoulder. Investigators also discovered multiple bullet holes in her vehicle.

Surveillance Video Captured Suspect Following Victim Before Shooting

Frisco Police Detective Miranda Hernandez investigated the shooting.

The victim identified Espinoza, her soon-to-be ex-husband, as the person who shot her.

Investigators obtained surveillance footage from businesses along the Dallas North Tollway and Eldorado Parkway that showed Espinoza following the woman before the shooting.

The footage also documented his actions afterward.

According to the District Attorney's Office, Espinoza abandoned his vehicle, changed his shirt, discarded the firearm used in the shooting and arranged for a friend to pick him up.

Carrollton police later arrested Espinoza.

Prosecutors said Espinoza subsequently confessed to his daughter that he had shot the victim.

Jury Convicts Espinoza, Judge Imposes 60-Year Sentence

A Collin County jury found Espinoza guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury to a family member.

During the punishment phase, prosecutors presented additional evidence that Espinoza possessed child sexual abuse material, including images and videos, as well as material depicting bestiality.

After hearing the evidence, visiting Judge Michael Snipes sentenced Espinoza to 60 years in prison.

"This man shot his wife in the face and shoulder, then tried to cover his tracks by dumping his car, his shirt, and the gun," District Attorney Greg Willis said.

"A jury convicted him, and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Holding domestic violence offenders accountable is a priority for this office."

Collin County Prosecutors and Investigators

Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Samantha Shaffer and Ann Mathew prosecuted the case.

They were assisted by District Attorney Investigator Robin Laughon and Victim Assistance Coordinator Dixie Hardin.

Frisco Police Detective Miranda Hernandez led the criminal investigation, while Carrollton police made the arrest.
