Irving Wrestling Makes History

The Irving Wrestling Club competed in the Texas Greco/Freestyle State Tournament this past weekend.

The Tigers wrestled very well coming away with several honors. On Saturday they competed in the Greco portion and came away with several medals.

Alonzo Herrera wrestled at 120 lbs and came away with a 3rd place finish in the Cadet Division. In addition to Alonzo, Emanuel Ventura also placed 3rd in the 138 lbs Cadet Division which qualified the both of them for the Greco National Championship.

On Sunday these young men also competed in the Freestyle State Championship and improved on their previous day. Alonzo finished 1st at 120 lbs in the Cadet Division, to earn a State Championship, and Emanuel placed 2nd at 138 lbs in the Cadet Division, to earn State Runner up. This also earned them a trip to wrestle in the Freestyle National Championship in Fargo, North Dakota in July. Several other wrestlers competed extremely hard to fall just short of their goals, these wrestlers include: Cesar Perez, Elias Lopez, Guillermo Lopez, Jose Ochoa, Jose Alonzo, Juan Montenegro, Saulo Acosta, Samir Mussa, and Devon King-Feleciano. With these guys wrestling as well as they did, the Tigers earned the 2015 Texas USA Wrestling Cadet Freestyle Team State Championship!

This was a great opportunity for these wrestlers to represent not only their school, but their school district and state. This will be the 1st time that Irving has someone represent the City of Irving in the National Tournament since the 90s.
