LeBron James Breaks Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s All-Time Leading Scorer Record
On February 7th, 2023, LeBron James achieved the unthinkable. He eventually broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's almost 39-year-old record to become the NBA's all-time leading scorer - a monumental feat that has solidified his legacy as one of basketball’s greatest players ever.
James, a star player for the Los Angeles Lakers, achieved the notable feat by breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record of 38,387 points with his stellar performance of 38 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder in their 133-130 loss.
Abdul-Jabbar set the scoring record in April 1984, some eight months before James was even born! However, at 38 years of age, he entered the game against the Thunder requiring just 36 points in order to take the new record and make it his.
Unsurprisingly, he managed to do this with ease, as he made 39 points on the day and took his total to 38,390.
LeBron Achieved the Record in Front of Kareem
With a triumphant display, James raised both arms in the air to revel in his success as Abdul-Jabbar, who was attending at the Lakers' home court at 75 years young, rose from his seat and applauded.
For two decades, Abdul-Jabbar featured in the NBA as a player for both the Milwaukee Bucks and Lakers. During his spell with these teams, he became an all-time great, claiming six championship titles, six regular season MVP awards and twice picking up Finals MVP honors.
After being chosen first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, four-time NBA champion James has become a basketball legend. He moved to Miami Heat in 2010 and won two titles with them before heading back home to lead his team on their very own championship journey for 2016's title. Throughout his career, James has demonstrated unparalleled skill in these games - three times earning him an All-Star Game MVP title.
