Plano's defense dominates Mac, 24-8
Mickelsen completed 16 of 30 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown, and the Plano defense forced five turnovers. Plano (2-0) dominated from the outset, building a 10-0 lead before MacArthur (1-1) was able to get its initial first down early in the second quarter.
Safety Collin Brence led the Plano defense with an interception and a fumble recovery. Teammates Blair Burns and Matt Johnsonalso came up with interceptions, while Dwayne Hicks added another fumble recovery. MacArthur was limited to 231 total yards and only nine first downs.
Plano's Hunter Gore had three receptions for 44 yards, including a pair of impressive catches on a third-quarter scoring drive. Gore made a leaping catch down the sideline for a 24-yard gain that set up his 10-yard juggling TD reception, which gave Plano a 24-0 lead late in the third quarter.
Plano's first score came on a 7-yard run by Clayton Parlin in the first quarter. Plano added a booming 49-yard field goal by Chris Moore in the second for a 10-0 lead. Moore also came close to hitting a 55-yarder right before halftime, but the kick sailed just left of the goal posts.
Plano made it 17-0 on an 11-yard touchdown run by Kevin Merrill on his team's first series of the second half.
MacArthur finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. MacArthur drove to the Plano 16 before quarterback Shahzeb Khan threw a hard pass that was caught at the goal line by Shay Smith, and he held on despite a hard hit. A two-point conversion pass from Khan to Johnny Haynes cut Plano's lead to 24-8.
Haynes also had a fantastic 32-yard run that featured several broken tackles on the last play of the third quarter. But MacArthur tried a pass on the next play, and Brence intercepted.
