Mesquite Shooting: Carrollton Man Killed After Man Enters Business and Begins Shooting, Suspect Captured

On June 20, 2024, at approximately 11:05 pm, Mesquite Police Officers responded to the 1700 block of W. Burton Road after receiving a 911 call relating to a shooting.  The caller reported that a male entered a business and began shooting.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 60-year-old Muhammad Hussain of Carrollton with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Following the incident, surveillance footage provided crucial details about a suspect vehicle. Just two days later, on June 22nd, a Mesquite Police Officer spotted the identified vehicle during a routine patrol at approximately 12:56 a.m. A pursuit ensued, culminating in the arrest of Davonta Mathis, a 21-year-old from Waco.

Mathis faces charges of Evading Arrest with a Vehicle. Further investigation linked him directly to Mr. Hussain's murder, resulting in additional charges of Capital Murder. The Mesquite Police Department credited the Dallas Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for their collaboration in apprehending Mathis.

Mathis' bond has been set at $7.5 million.  He has also been charged in the Murder of 32-year-old Gopi Krishna Dasari in Pleasant Grove.
