Ranchview High School Student Arrested for THC Vape Possession

Faith Benedict Alvarez

An Irving School Resource Officer arrested a 17-year-old student last week after two THC vapes were discovered during a search at Ranchview High School in Valley Ranch.

On Wednesday, September 10, Officer A. Ortiz, the Ranchview SRO, was called to the associate principal’s office around 11:30 a.m. Two administrators and a school security officer were present with Faith Benedict Alvarez, 17, of Farmers Branch, a student at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton who attends Ranchview for engineering classes.

According to the incident report, a security officer initially searched Alvarez with a metal-detecting wand following a HALO vape sensor alert from a restroom she had been inside. During the process, the officer observed her place something in her back pocket. When instructed to hand it over, Alvarez surrendered a Muha Meds vape pen. A further search of her backpack uncovered another vape pen still sealed in packaging.

Both items were field-tested using a NIK Y THC Quick Test, returning positive results for THC.

Alvarez was placed under arrest and transported to the Irving Jail, where she was booked on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance PG2 in a Drug-Free Zone, a third-degree felony.

Authorities emphasized that the case highlights the serious consequences of bringing THC products onto school campuses. Under House Bill 114, signed into law in 2023, Texas schools are required to impose mandatory disciplinary measures for students found with THC, including placement in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP).

The incident also comes just weeks after Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s September 2025 executive order banning the sale of THC products to minors.
