Fort Worth Officers Honored for Heroic Response in Deputy Shooting

Six Fort Worth Police Officers were awarded the Lifesaving and Heroes’ Award by the Sons of American Revolution Van Zandt Chapter for their courageous actions during an incident on November 27, 2023, where a Tarrant County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot at a credit union in Fort Worth.

On Monday, November 27, 2023, at 3:42 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 6400 block of Brentwood Stair Road. Upon arrival, they discovered that a Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office deputy had been shot.

Officers entered the business, traversing broken glass on the floor, a layer of fog inside the lobby, and a heavy smell of fresh gunpowder. They observed employees standing behind the bank counter who confirmed that a deputy was shot and lying on the ground near them. Fort Worth Police Officer Luis Canizares maintained control in the front lobby, while Officer Nicholas Bernal and Sgt. Chris Ramirez relocated behind the bank counter to aid the deputy.

Officer Timothy Kinman and Officer Roxanna Sanchez arrived on the scene with a medical kit. Officer Kinman partnered with Officer Canizares, at which time they began to secure the location by searching the business's interior. Officer Roxanna Sanchez immediately went to the wounded deputy, and with the assistance of Officer Bernal, began to provide emergency medical aid to the deputy. Officer Wesley Anderson arrived on the scene and aided in clearing the business, making it secure to provide emergency medical aid. The suspect was located a short time later and the deputy was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

Their decisive and courageous actions not only demonstrated their commitment to serving and protecting the community but also played a vital role in ensuring the injured officer received prompt medical care, ultimately saving a life.
