On Wednesday, August 7th, at approximately 12:15 p.m., a Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputy was shot while serving a warrant in the 2900 block of Elinor Street in Fort Worth, near N. Beach Street and 28th Street. The deputy sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth. According to Tarrant County Judge O’Hare, the deputy’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The deputy was grazed on the head and shot in the arm and thigh. Sheriff Bill Waybourn reported that the deputy is conscious and communicating with family members.
A standoff ensued with the heavily armed suspect at the residence on Elinor Street. As a result, NE 28th Street was blocked off near N. Beach Street due to heavy law enforcement activity. Haltom City residents around the area were asked to shelter-in-place. SWAT teams was called in.
The suspect, a 40-year-old male, was injured while being taken into custody. Smoke was observed coming from the residence, and the Fort Worth Fire Department has been deployed to manage the fire. The scene is now secure.
The warrant involved three felony charges related to sexual crimes against a child. Heavy police activity is expected at JPS Hospital as officers visit the injured deputy.
UPDATE August 7 @ 6 PM: According to TCSO, the deputy who was shot was released from the hospital. The Fort Worth Police Department said in a statement, "we can confirm the suspect died due to a gunshot wound. Whether the fatal gunshot was self-inflicted or from a law enforcement officer is still being investigated." SWAT officers were also injured during the shooting incident from shattered glass while making entry into the residence.
