Fort Worth Pauses Trinity River Waterwheel Initiative Due to $500,000 Funding Gap

The City of Fort Worth has announced that the Trinity River Waterwheel Initiative will be placed on hold until additional funding is secured. Initially launched in December 2021 in collaboration with the Tarrant Regional Water District and Streams & Valleys Inc., the project aimed to install a waterwheel in the Trinity River to reduce litter.

The project's cost, originally estimated at $1.9 million, now faces a $500,000 shortfall due to increased material and labor costs. While the design is complete and donations remain secure, city staff will reach out to donors regarding refunds or reallocation to other anti-litter programs. The project will resume once future funding is identified.

If additional funding opportunities become available, the City will revisit the Trinity River Waterwheel Initiative.
