On Sunday afternoon, February 2, 2025, a Bedford Police officer narrowly avoided injury after a vehicle struck one of the department's newly-marked patrol cars while the officer was assisting a motorist on northbound Highway 121. The patrol vehicle had its lights activated when the collision occurred.
The driver of the car, who was reportedly checking gas prices on their phone, failed to notice that traffic was slowing down and did not move over a lane in time. The officer, who was standing outside the patrol vehicle, managed to jump over a barrier just in time to avoid being hit by the car.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the police car was arrested for traffic violations and additional, unrelated charges. Despite the loss of the patrol car, which incurred damage, the officer was unharmed in the incident.
Bedford Police are reminding drivers of the importance of staying focused on the road to prevent accidents, as even a moment of distraction can lead to life-altering consequences.
