Denton Traffic Stop Leads to Capture of Wanted Murderer Tied to Georgia and Arkansas Homicides

Michael Thomas Dusch

What started as a routine patrol stop in a Denton parking lot has unraveled into a major multi-state criminal investigation involving two murders, child exploitation, and a stolen RV — and Denton Police are being credited with cracking the case wide open.

The events unfolded on March 6, 2025, when a Denton patrol officer driving a vehicle newly outfitted with a license plate reader scanned the plate of a North Carolina-registered RV. The system flagged the vehicle as stolen, prompting the officer to approach. Inside the RV was Michael Thomas Dusch, 29, of North Carolina, who was arrested on the spot for outstanding child exploitation warrants and vehicle theft out of his home state.

What Denton Police didn’t know at the time was that Dusch would soon be linked to two separate murders — one in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and another in Logan County, Arkansas — as well as attempted check fraud, theft of firearms, and possession of documents belonging to both homicide victims.

The Central Georgian, a news outlet covering stories in Georgia, reported that the Georgia victim was recently found murdered and that documents connected to him were discovered in Dusch’s RV by Denton Police. After being alerted to the documents, investigators in Georgia reached out to Denton authorities, who had also found personal documents belonging to an 84-year-old Arkansas man, William Harris, who had been found dead just days earlier from a crossbow bolt wound inside his home.

Inside the RV, Denton Police also located a crossbow, later believed to be the murder weapon in the Arkansas case.

Following the discovery, investigators from Arkansas State Police, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office converged on Denton. Together with Denton’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit, they conducted a full forensic sweep of the RV and gathered critical evidence that tied Dusch to both homicides.

According to officials, the breakthrough came after Dusch tried to cash a fraudulent check from Harris’s bank account in Arkansas while driving Harris’s vehicle. When questioned by bank staff, Dusch fled the scene — but not before investigators traced the ID used in the attempt to a man murdered in Georgia.

Denton Police were also the first to discover that Dusch had documents connected to both murder victims, triggering the interstate investigation.

Dusch was extradited to Georgia to face murder charges and is expected to be charged in Arkansas for the killing of William Harris. North Carolina officials have confirmed he was under investigation there for child exploitation, and he fled the state in the stolen RV Denton Police recovered.

For Denton residents, the incident is a stark reminder of how critical technology and proactive policing can be. The officer’s use of new license plate reader technology didn’t just recover a stolen vehicle — it helped solve two murders and expose a nationwide crime spree.

The Central Georgian, which first reported the Georgia side of the case, has praised the Denton Police Department’s quick action in identifying Dusch and uncovering the evidence that connected him to victims across state lines.

Authorities in all four involved states continue to work together as Dusch awaits further prosecution.
