Combative Man Arrested After Speeding Stop Escalates Into Harassment of Irving Officer

Tajon Jefferson

IRVING, Texas — A routine traffic stop Sunday evening turned into an arrest after a driver allegedly became combative with an Irving police officer.

On February 15 at approximately 5:10 p.m., an Irving Police officer was conducting LIDAR speed enforcement in the 3600 block of West Northgate Drive near North Belt Line Road when he observed a black 2011 Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed. According to the arrest affidavit, the vehicle was clocked at 60 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as 26-year-old Tajon Jefferson of Red Oak. Police said the officer was immediately met with what was described as a hostile attitude.

Due to Jefferson’s behavior, the officer asked him to step out of the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs for detention. According to the affidavit, Jefferson refused to sit down, stepped forward into the officer’s face, and had to be taken to the ground. Police say he then attempted to get up and flee but was again placed on the ground.

During the struggle, Jefferson allegedly screamed intentionally and spat on the officer, causing saliva to come into contact with the officer’s hand and uniform while the officer was performing official duties.

Jefferson was arrested and transported to the Irving Jail. He is charged with Harassment of a Public Servant.

Police say what began as a speeding violation ultimately escalated into a criminal offense.
