Irving Man Accused of Holding Wife Captive at Knifepoint During Domestic Violence Attack

Heyby Cardenas-Ruiz

IRVING, Texas - A 24-year-old Irving man was arrested after police say he assaulted his wife, prevented her from calling 911, held her against her will and threatened to kill her with a pocketknife during a domestic violence incident.

Irving police responded at approximately 8:22 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, to the Trinity Apartments in the 1100 block of Esters Road near Conflans Road after receiving a domestic violence call.

According to investigators, officers contacted the victim, who said she and her husband, 24-year-old Heyby Cardenas-Ruiz, had been involved in a verbal argument while inside a vehicle.

The victim told officers Cardenas-Ruiz grabbed her right arm and forcibly pulled her from the vehicle, causing pain and leaving a visible bruise.

Police said the assault continued after the couple returned to their apartment. When the victim attempted to call 911, Cardenas-Ruiz took her cellphone and disconnected the emergency call, preventing her from requesting police assistance.

Investigators said Cardenas-Ruiz then grabbed the victim by the chest, dragged her into a bedroom and threw her onto a bed. He allegedly displayed a pocketknife and threatened to stab and kill her, causing the victim to fear for her life.

According to police, he also prevented the victim from leaving the apartment by physically blocking her path and using force to restrain her.

The victim was eventually able to leave after telling Cardenas-Ruiz she was going to her mother's house. Once there, she contacted police.

Officers later located and detained Cardenas-Ruiz at the apartment.

Based on the victim's statement, the physical injuries observed by responding officers and the evidence gathered during the investigation, Cardenas-Ruiz was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Family Violence), Interference with an Emergency Request for Assistance, and Unlawful Restraint.
