Irving Man Threatens Shopper With Knife Just Two Weeks After Receiving Probation for Threatening Police Officer
Richard Bishop

IRVING, Texas — A 49-year-old man who received deferred adjudication probation earlier this month for threatening an Irving police officer is back behind bars after police say he pulled a large knife on a man outside a North Irving shopping center and threatened to kill him.

Richard Dean Bishop, 49, was arrested Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony. His bond was set at $30,000, and he remains in custody at the Dallas County Jail.

The incident occurred around 3:22 p.m. at a shopping center in the 4000 block of North Belt Line Road, near West Walnut Hill Lane.

According to Irving police, officers responded to a reported disturbance involving a knife.

Suspect Accused of Pulling Knife After Women Refused to Give Him Money

The male victim told police that Bishop had been asking customers for money outside one of the businesses.

Two female relatives of the victim were leaving a store when Bishop approached them and asked for money. The women declined and attempted to walk away, but Bishop reportedly became upset and began yelling at them.

The victim, who had been watching from his vehicle, got out and approached Bishop to find out what was happening.

Police said Bishop then pulled out a large knife and began making slashing motions toward the man while threatening to kill and shoot him.

The victim told investigators that Bishop's aggressive behavior, the knife movements and the close distance between them caused him to fear for his life.

The man and his two female relatives retreated to their vehicle, left the shopping center and called 911.

Officers subsequently contacted Bishop and found him in possession of two large knives.

According to police, Bishop made several statements acknowledging that he had pulled a knife on the man.

He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Bishop Was Sentenced to Probation October 6 for Threatening Irving Officer

The arrest came just 14 days after Bishop received a two-year deferred adjudication probation sentence in a separate criminal case.

That case stemmed from an October 2025 incident in which Bishop threatened to shoot and harm an Irving police officer with a firearm.

Bishop reached a plea agreement in the earlier case involving a charge of terroristic threat against a public servant.

On October 6, 2026, he was placed on two years of deferred adjudication probation.

Less than two weeks later, he was arrested in the shopping center confrontation.

Bishop remains in the Dallas County Jail on the new aggravated assault charge, with bond set at $30,000.
