Sunnyvale Appoints First Female Full-Time Fire Chief, Marking Historic Milestone

Chief Kayea being sworn in by Town Secretary Rachel Ramsey

In a ceremony held on Monday night, the Town of Sunnyvale officially welcomed its new Fire Chief, Kayea, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first female full-time fire chief in North Texas.

The announcement of Chief Kayea's appointment was made by Town Manager Jeff Jones on December 20. Jones highlighted her extensive experience in the field and her impressive fourth-generation heritage in the fire service as factors contributing to her selection.

Chief Kayea, a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program from the National Fire Academy, holds a master's degree in management and leadership from Tarleton State University. Additionally, she is a Master Firefighter Certification holder and a Licensed Paramedic.

With over 27 years of experience in the fire service, Chief Kayea rose through the ranks at Dallas Fire and Rescue, where she served in various roles, including EMS Section Chief, Battalion Chief, and ultimately Deputy Chief in 2018. Her appointment in Sunnyvale follows the retirement of Fire Chief Doug Kendrick in August.

Mayor Saji George emphasized the importance of a Fire Chief's comprehensive understanding of fire and EMS service, coupled with a passion for community. Chief Kayea's background aligns with these criteria, making her an ideal choice for Sunnyvale.

Chief Kayea's professional achievements include membership on Dallas Fire and Rescue's Critical Incident Stress Management Team and Peer Support Team, as well as involvement with the Governor's EMS and Trauma Advisory Council. She has lectured extensively and authored numerous articles on fire service and EMS procedures. Chief Kayea's proudest accomplishment is being named Staff Officer of the Year, a recognition nominated by the officers she worked with. The Town of Sunnyvale expresses pride and excitement in welcoming Chief Kayea to lead its fire department.
