Devin Smith, aged 30, pleaded guilty to the murder of Carlos Aybar at a West 7th Street apartment complex, as announced by the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office. The court sentenced Smith to 31 years in prison.
Rachel Canelon, Aybar's mother, expressed her grief through a translator, stating, "He was my only son and you took his life without remorse." Family members and friends wore white t-shirts featuring Aybar's photo with the words "Justice for Carlos."
The incident occurred on April 21, 2023, when Smith, engaged in a heated argument with an employee at The Marq apartments, fatally shot Aybar, who intervened to assist his coworker. Smith, who had been evicted, committed the act.
The Fort Worth Police Department conducted the investigation, while the case was prosecuted by DA assistant Hilary Wright.
