Dallas College Launches Bachelor's in Software Development to Meet Growing Tech Demands

Dallas College is set to launch its Bachelor of Applied Technology in Software Development this Fall, providing students with an affordable pathway to in-demand careers in tech. The program has received approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

“This new program reflects our commitment to providing students with accessible, high-quality pathways to the skills needed for the careers of today and tomorrow,” said Dallas College Chancellor Justin Lonon. The program, which focuses on areas like data analytics and machine learning, will offer both in-person and fully online classes for flexibility.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 17% growth rate for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers by 2033, with starting salaries for new graduates around $77,000.

Dr. Raghunath Kanakala, vice provost of Dallas College’s School of Engineering, Technology, Mathematics, and Sciences, emphasized the increasing demand for skilled software developers, particularly as businesses continue relocating to the area. The program will provide hands-on experience, mentorship, and a curriculum designed to meet industry standards, ensuring students are prepared for the workforce.

Dallas College also offers affordable tuition rates at $99 per credit hour for in-county students, which covers most learning materials and books, making it a cost-effective alternative to four-year universities.
