Irving, TX – A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison for a 2023 drunk driving crash that left his girlfriend with life-threatening injuries.
Andrew Estevan Sanchez pleaded guilty on September 5, 2025, to Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury, a second-degree felony. The court also issued a deadly weapon finding in connection with the case.
The crash occurred on August 30, 2023, around 7:18 p.m. Investigators say Sanchez, then 21, and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Bailey Terhaar-St. Clair, were returning to Euless from the Dallas Aquarium after a day of heavy drinking. Both had blood alcohol levels more than three times the legal limit.
Sanchez was reportedly driving 97 mph on State Highway 183 in Irving, weaving through traffic, when he lost control and rear-ended and sideswiped another vehicle carrying a four-year-old passenger. Bailey, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected more than 150 feet from the vehicle.
Multiple 911 callers described the scene as horrific, and paramedics initially believed Bailey might not survive. She was rushed to Parkland Hospital, where she spent over two months recovering from a traumatic brain injury and severe road rash. Her recovery included time in the ICU Burn Unit and extensive rehabilitation after being flown back to her home state of Oregon.
In court, Bailey bravely testified about the crash and Sanchez’s history of violence, including his prior arrest for felony domestic violence and strangulation against her in Oregon just one month before the crash.
The case was led by Prosecutor Cassidy Richardson, with support from DA Investigator Danny Titus and DA Paralegal Leslie Smith. The Irving Police Department and its Vehicular Crimes Unit were recognized for their key role in the investigation.
