Arlington Drug Dealer Sentenced to 30 Years for Fentanyl Overdose Death

Dwaine McKinney

The Tarrant County District Attorney's Office announced on May 2nd that 27-year-old Dwaine McKinney pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The conviction stems from the November 2023 fentanyl overdose death of a 20-year-old man in Arlington.

This case marks a significant application of a new Texas law that allows prosecutors to charge individuals with murder if they manufacture or deal fentanyl that directly causes another person's death. McKinney admitted to selling drugs, including fentanyl, to the victim.

The Arlington Police Department conducted the investigation that led to McKinney's conviction.
