A large fire destroyed a home in the 6900 block of Sanctuary Heights Road in southwest Fort Worth early Wednesday morning, May 28, after a suspected lightning strike ignited the blaze.
The Fort Worth Fire Department received multiple calls shortly after 8:00 a.m. reporting a house fire. When crews arrived, they found flames shooting from the roof of a large residence set back from the road. The fire was being fueled by ruptured gas lines inside the structure.
Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack, but a partial roof collapse forced them to retreat and regroup. A second alarm was issued to bring in additional personnel due to the size and complexity of the fire. A third alarm was later called after a firefighter fell through an elevator shaft. A Mayday alert was issued, but quickly canceled when the firefighter was located and safely brought outside by fellow responders.
Roughly 90 firefighters worked for nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control. One firefighter sustained an injury. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
