Original Post:
On Wednesday, June 4, at approximately 1:50 p.m., Garland Police Department officers responded to a reported disturbance at Motel 6, located at 12721 LBJ Freeway. The disturbance involved a conflict between a tenant and hotel management.
When officers arrived and attempted to speak with the tenant, the individual pointed a firearm at them. Officers took cover and requested assistance. Due to the aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon and the high-risk situation, the department’s SWAT team was deployed.
Detectives obtained a warrant for the suspect, and nearby rooms were evacuated for safety. SWAT negotiators attempted to contact the barricaded suspect, but he refused to respond. Officers then deployed tear gas into the room.
As officers approached the window, the suspect confronted a SWAT officer with a firearm. The officer fired his department-issued rifle, striking the suspect. Officers entered the room and found the suspect deceased from the gunfire.
A second individual was also found deceased inside the room. Investigators believe this person had been dead for some time prior to the standoff.
No officers were injured during the incident. The Garland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate both the actions of the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the second death.
The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending confirmation by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office and notification of next of kin.
