FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – The Farmers Branch City Council will consider calling a special election at its November 4 meeting to determine the City’s future with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). If approved, voters would decide next year whether Farmers Branch should withdraw from DART and explore alternative transit options or remain with the agency.
City officials emphasized that Farmers Branch remains committed to regional mobility and mass transit but wants greater fairness and transparency in its partnership with DART.
Currently, Farmers Branch allocates one full cent of its local sales tax—half of its total taxing capacity—to DART. According to an independent Ernst & Young study, the City contributed about $24.3 million to DART in 2023, while only $20.8 million was spent within Farmers Branch, highlighting what leaders described as a funding imbalance.
Officials stressed that the City is not abandoning public transportation but seeking solutions that better meet local needs and ensure reliable service for residents.
