Arrest Made in 2011 Cold Case Murder in Bell County

Alvin Dewayne Canton, aged 56, has been arrested by the Bell County Sheriff’s Department, Criminal Investigations Division, for the murder of Shayna Lynnette Waller, who was 26 years old at the time of her death.

Shayna's body was discovered on Quarry Road in West Bell County on January 29, 2011, with an autopsy revealing she had succumbed to multiple stab wounds, leading authorities to classify her death as a homicide.

Recent efforts by investigators prompted a reopening of Shayna's case, culminating in interviews with Canton. Subsequently, evidence was presented to the Bell County District Attorney’s Office, resulting in the acceptance of a murder charge. On March 1, 2023, Justice of the Peace Cliff Coleman issued an arrest warrant for Canton, setting a recommended bond of one million dollars.

Seeking assistance in apprehending Canton, investigators enlisted the support of the US Marshal’s Texas Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. On Thursday, March 6, 2024, Canton was apprehended in Kendey, Karnes County, Texas, on the murder warrant with the aid of the US Marshal’s Texas Lone Star Fugitive Task Force- Waco and San Antonio Divisions.

Canton is currently in the custody of the Karnes County Sheriff’s Department awaiting arraignment and extradition back to Bell County. The family of Shayna has been notified of Canton's arrest.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department extended gratitude to the US Marshal’s Texas Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, The Texas Rangers, and the Karnes County Sheriff’s Department for their collaborative efforts leading to Canton's arrest.
