Dallas Man Sentenced to 30 Years After Armed Confrontation at Rap Studio

Emmett Thompson

A Dallas County jury has found 31-year-old Emmett Rashad Thompson guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

The case, prosecuted by lead attorney Jillian Kushner and second chair Jessica Trevizo, stemmed from an incident on October 8, 2022, when victim Dameion Cofer went to a rap studio on Lucy Street with his cousin, best friend, and four-year-old nephew.

While inside the studio, Thompson entered, displayed a gun with an illegal switch, and stated, “If you want to die tonight, come outside.” Cofer, who was also armed, chose to leave with his family to avoid a confrontation.

As they walked to their vehicle, Thompson approached Cofer, put a gun to his head, and demanded his firearm. A struggle ensued, and Cofer shot Thompson three times before leaving with his family. Cofer later returned to inform police of the incident. After an investigation, Dallas police determined he acted in self-defense, and Thompson was arrested.

Thompson had been released from prison just eight months prior after serving time for aggravated robbery. The case was investigated by the Dallas Police Department, with support from DA investigators Jesse Cantu and DA paralegal Wanda Ford.
