Former The Colony Teacher Sentenced to 20 Years for Sexually Assaulting Student

John Leslie Collett

John Leslie Collett, a former teacher at Camey Elementary School in The Colony, has been sentenced to 20 years in State Prison for the sexual assault of a ten-year-old student. The sentence was handed down on Friday, March 28, 2025, by 367th Judicial District Court Judge Brent Hill.

Collett pleaded guilty to one count of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a child, two counts of Indecency with a Child, and one count of Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student. In addition to the prison term, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

The guilty plea followed an investigation that began in April 2023 after the victim came forward. The Denton County District Attorney's Office commended the collaborative efforts of The Colony Police Department, The Children's Advocacy Center for North Texas, and Child Protective Services in bringing the case to a resolution and seeking justice for the child.
