During the regular meeting of the Irving ISD Board of Trustees for April 2, 2012, Trustees approved the purchase of iPads and accessories.
According to the resolution, "Apple Computer, Inc. is the sole distributor of iPads to the education market in Texas. Apples holds a Department of Information Resources (DIR) contract for the sale of iPads and accessories." The price per item is set by the contract verbiage.
The resolution approved by the Trustees sets the expense cap at $250,000.00.
"Funding for the devices will come from various programs and departments: Local funds, Special Education, Bilingual/ESL, CTE, Parent/Student Services and bund funds."
According to a memo from Dr. Alice Owen and Keith Larson, dated March 28, 2012, which requests the approval to purchase iPads, "the devices will be used for summer school programs, teachers and support staff."
Through the agreement, an iPad (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi, 16 gb, would run at $479.00 per unit. The iPad2 carries a cost of $399.00 per unit with a $99 fee for a 2-year protection plan.
During the same meeting, a separate resoluton was approved for the purchase of 5,300 student netbooks, 750 classroom desktops and 650 teacher laptops. Cost not to exceed $4,128,372.50.
